Doulas
Also known as death doulas, death midwives and death coaches, end-of-life doulas offer non-medical comfort and companionship to people diagnosed with a terminal illness or facing imminent death. Doulas can help the dying person and their family/loved ones with emotional and spiritual preparation, as well as practical care and compassionate support at bedside during the dying’s transition.
By creating space for open discussion about the dying process, life reviews and fears about death, the doula also guides those involved toward better understanding and acceptance. Their assistance planning physical and after-death care can foster greater peace of mind and ease the burden on caregivers.
Many have said that a doula’s involvement in the death of their loved one imbued greater calm and meaning into the entire experience.
